I think that in my case this is related to TMJ disorder. As others have mentioned, there is a nerve connecting the ear, jaw and neck that runs in close proximity to this joint, and any stress or dislocation of the joint may be causing the symptoms described here.
Here is my [anecdotal] evidence to support this conclusion: I have been suffering with the disorder for almost 9 months and during this time I have noticed that my left ear (the one in which I carry significant tension and occasional pain) is often red, sore and hot, especially during hotter temperatures and at night. My right ear does not exhibit the same symptoms.
I will hopefully be undergoing splint therapy in the future to entirely resolve or help reduce my jaw problems. If this does result in lessening of the red ear symptoms everyone is suffering from, I will aim to report back (if I can remember that I posted this!). I will also aim to improve my wellbeing and posture as I believe these could be linked as well.
